Ecovillage Transition Toolkit and Handbook

 Sourcehttps://ecovillage.org/ecovillage-transition-in-action-2

Ecovillage Transition in ActionAn EU funded collaboration to scale up ecovillage solutions

Project Summary

Addressing systemic crises will not derive only from international organisations, governments and politicians, they require a greater collective response. Communities, citizens, NGOs and other forms of civil society hold many of the solutions. In a fragmented world, successful cross-sectoral collaboration is key, particularly partnerships that blur the lines between top-down and bottom-up, i.e. partnerships between municipalities and community-led initiatives (CLIs).

It is common in our networks to see examples of engaged communities working for positive change who feel unsupported by local governments. We also see municipalities determined to act and support, who are struggling to build genuinely collaborative relationships with communities and other local initiatives.

The project “Ecovillage Transition in Action” explored how ecovillages, community-led initiatives, local government and local academic institutions can better collaborate to scale both horizontally and vertically in order to catalyse regional sustainability innovation.

Completing a three year long partnership, the Ecovillage Transition in Action is now proud to share learnings, inspirations, outcomes and tools created throughout the international project to:

– Grow the capacity of educators, local initiatives, local authorities, citizens and community organisers to facilitate this crucial but complicated collaboration, and to teach those skills and capacities to others.

– Provide accessible and transferable educational tools, curricula, and methods for bringing together community-led initiatives and local government actors, and increase the depth and quality of collaboration between them.

– Provide a set of replicable trainings that support our target groups to acquire key competencies and skills for what we call Ecovillage Transition – a process where municipal authorities and local citizens work together to develop alternative pathways to local development, based on a holistic framework of social, cultural, economic and ecological regeneration.

Collaboration Partners

Ecovillage Transition in Action was a strategic partnership between 5 organisations from 4 countries funded by the EU Erasmus+ programme.

Materials and Resources developed through the 3-year project

Ecovillage Transition Toolkit

A toolkit to collate and curate knowledge and practices in ecovillages and community-led initiatives can integrate with local government institutions and processes (municipalities, regional municipalities, local authorities and community councils as appropriate) to catalyse regional innovation and impacts in line with the SDG aspirations and actions. The educational exercises and tools previously developed in other Erasmus+ partnerships like T2R, CLIPS and SIRCle can provide core ingredients, as will the foundational tools of the Map of Regeneration (with the Ecovillage Design Cards) and the Journey of Regeneration. In addition, new tools and knowledge creation has been fed into the Toolkit while making tools available in French, German and English.

Ecovillage Transition Toolkit von Carolin Waldmann

Handbook: Communities and local authorities collaborating for sustainability

A curriculum offering fresh framings for different actors to work with communities and across sectors for bioregional transformation and restoration. Individuals from ecovillages, community led initiatives, local government and local colleges or universities can come together to learn how to design and implement local and bioregional regeneration in line with the Ecovillage Principles and the SDGs. The complete handbook is also available for you in French and German.

Council Ways

 Source: https://howlingcastle.wordpress.com/council-ways/

Inviting all who want to explore this simple and powerful way of communication. More than a way of sharing, it is a practice that moves us to a deeper, more compassionate level of communicating and being.

Mostly based on The Way of Council and on ancient traditions that keep on crossing my paths, these spaces are just a circle—or a spiral?—where each part, each node can witness and be witnessed in the moment, with whatever is alive. Sometimes we come together with a prior intention to explore particular issues, sometimes the doors are open to whatever comes. Most often we sense a wisdom beyond each part, and although unexpected, the flow, the themes, the sharings simply make sense.

Circles holding circles within circles

A Council Way into our Full Humanity

These one and a half hour sessions are a place to come and taste the space of council, and are suited for any level of experience.  Sometimes once is what you need, sometimes they become a place of refuge, or connection. They’re offered at different times and days of the week in the hope of bringing together an ever-changing flow of peoples, ages, stories…

Here you can check the current offerings

Council Journeys

Over several weeks (usually four), we explore the practice of council, in a small-group setting. You get to know more about different shapes and variations, some of the history and evolution of this way of inquiry. We get to deepen connections with our selves and each other.

Here you can check the current offerings

Council of Beings

What happens when we let go of our circumstantial identity as a human being, when we touch the connections with other beings and let them speak through us? A space to witness what moves us deeply from the world we live in. Especially powerful in the context of the ongoing crises of our biosphere.

Offerings coming soon!

My own Council Journey… I’m Dita. I fell in love with the Way of Council some six years ago, when I attended my first one at High Heathercombe, up in the dramatic moors of Dartmoor. My dear friend Mel Lamb held it with her characteristic and amazing energy—I learned much from Mel in the coming years, and got to hold circles with her until her passing in 2020. Since that first one, I have attended many councils, in different contexts, and have experienced a wide diversity of flavours and intentions. I’ve had the honour and privilege to learn from the expert and caring hands of many, especially Klaudia van GoolJeremy Thres, and Sophy Banks. But most of my learning comes from a beloved teacher and my council guide, Pip Bondy. It is from her that my council tradition comes from. She was taught by Gigi Coyle in the tradition of the Ojai Foundation, where the Way of Council as we practice it today was co-creatively brought into life.

School Circles (2021) - documentary

School Circles (2021) - documentary - Short Version (44 min)

School Circles is an independent documentary that explores the practice of democratic schools in the Netherlands. The film shows students, teachers and staff members coming together to dialogue, discuss proposals, mediate conflicts and make decisions about their school life.

These schools not only challenge the mainstream education, but also democracy as we know it. They put into practice Sociocracy, a method for collective organisation based on a systems perspective, in which the decisions are made by hearing all the voices and getting everyone's consent.

School Circles connects the theory of sociocracy to its practice within schools, taking us to new possibilities of organising ourselves and our communities.

MORE INFO:

The directors of the film are trained sociocracy facilitators and offer courses around democratic governance and sociocracy within schools and educational settings. For more info visit: https://www.wonderingschool.org/socio...

Mosaic - We are born to learn

Wanting to learn more about unschooling?

Mosaic, a platform serving self-directed learners and leaders, is launching today! On it, you’ll find community, resources, and personal stories (including upcoming ones by NoNo and KK) for wherever you are on your unschooling journey.
Check it out!

MOSAIC IS FOR ALL OF US WHO BELIEVE THERE’S A BETTER WAY. The pandemic ignited big questions around how we learn and the effectiveness of our education system. It reinforced how our current system has—by design and since its inception—perpetuated the worst forms of inequality, segregation, and alienation. We will likely never return to “normal.” Parents, young people, and their communities are looking for a different way. A better way. One that celebrates and nurtures our natural sense of wonder and curiosity. Self-directed education—also referred to as independent learning, unschooling, self-directed learning, liberated learning, and independent learning—is a way of life and learning that puts young people in the driver’s seat of their education. It’s been around for decades—and new families discover it every day. Thousands of young people wake up in charge of what they learn and how they learn it. They follow their passions and interests. They light up with curiosity. They do it at home. They do it with their families, their friends. They do it at community centers. And in the process, they develop tools for inquiry, empathy, and self-determination. Whether you’re curious about self-directed education or you’ve been doing it for years, Mosaic is for you.

WHAT WE DO
Mosaic is a platform serving independent learners and leaders who believe that young people should be free to drive their learning.
We launched in July 2021 and will evolve over the coming months and years—with your input and ideas. We believe that more and more families and young people will embrace independent learning if they are able to see it in action, hear from those who are living it, and receive the support and the resources to overcome common barriers.

HOW MOSAIC CAME TO BE We came to life with the help of a community. Advisors, leaders, parents, and young people who brought their lived experiences and perspectives to shape and inform Mosaic. Mosaic is a 501c3 funded by entrepreneur, author and philanthropist Jeff Westphal, who is committed to using his resources and experience to advance transformational change toward deeper meaning in business, education and autism treatment. He is an unschooling parent who believes in the power of independent learning and the imperative to make it accessible to all communities. The idea for the platform emerged after a multi-year effort to understand why and how our existing education system is failing so many of the young people it serves and how independent learning allows young people to find their passion for learning and intrinsic meaning in their lives.

FOR COMMUNITY AND BY COMMUNITY Mosaic centers the stories and voices of those who live and breathe unschooling. Our resources are created by people with lived experience and expertise in self-directed education—in their voices and from their perspectives.

Stories for a Regenerative Culture

Source: https://www.thegreatrelation.org/all-films

“Relation is the essence of everything that exists.”
— Master Eckhart

When we look closer, we discover that Life is an explosion of relation, everywhere around and inside of us. From the biology of our bodies, to insects and plants, communication between trees through mycelium circuits... Relation is in the DNA of Life. Interaction and interdepedancy are part of our essence. We, humans, are in relation with ourselves, others and nature. All our senses, feelings and emotions are potential gateways to connect. These invisible and indivisible bounds relate us to Life at each moment.

In The Great Relation, we wish to share the beauty and mystery of this constant ocean of relation and bring light to creative ways in which Life experiences itself through human beings that are looking for more conscious and regenerative ways to relate to her.

A filmmaking project for a new culture

In these times of great transition, our aim is to communicate meaningful  projects and stories that bring healing and regeneration to the  individual, collective and environmental dimensions of our world.

We are exploring the potential of human beings to create a more conscious and regenerative way of living on this planet. These exploration goes from the design of resilient settlements, like intentional communities and ecovillages, and the discovery of practical ecological solutions, to spirituality and different approaches to relate more consciously with one another, heal our cultural wounds and traumas, and many other topics.

Our dream is to contribute to the flourishment of human consciousness through films that inspire to relate deeper with ourselves, others and nature.

“How do we change the world? Change the story.”
— Charles Eisenstein

Ten Keys to Happier Living

The Ten Keys to Happier Living are based on a review of the latest research from psychology and related fields. Everyone's path to happiness is different, but the evidence suggests these Ten Keys consistently tend to have a positive impact on people's happiness and well-being.
The first five keys (GREAT) are about how we interact with the outside world in our daily activities. They are based on the Five Ways to Wellbeing developed by nef as part of the Foresight Project. The second five keys (DREAM) come from inside us and depend on our attitude to life.
Giving icon
Caring about others is fundamental to our happiness. Helping other people is not only good for them and a great thing to do, it also makes us happier and healthier too. Giving also creates stronger connections between people and helps to build a happier society for everyone. And it's not all about money - we can also give our time, ideas and energy. So if you want to feel good, do good! Read more...
Relating icon
Relationships are the most important overall contributor to happiness. People with strong and broad social relationships are happier, healthier and live longer. Close relationships with family and friends provide love, meaning, support and increase our feelings of self worth. Broader networks bring a sense of belonging. So taking action to strengthen our relationships and create new connections is essential for happiness. Read more...
Exercising icon
Our body and our mind are connected. Being active makes us happier as well as being good for our physical health. It instantly improves our mood and can even lift us out of a depression. We don't all need to run marathons - there are simple things we can all do to be more active each day. We can also boost our well-being by unplugging from technology, getting outside and making sure we get enough sleep! Read more...
Appreciating icon
Ever felt there must be more to life? Well good news, there is! And it's right here in front of us. We just need to stop and take notice. Learning to be more mindful and aware can do wonders for our well-being in all areas of life - like our walk to work, the way we eat or our relationships. It helps us get in tune with our feelings and stops us dwelling on the past or worrying about the future - so we get more out of the day-to-day. Read more...
Trying Out icon
Learning affects our well-being in lots of positive ways. It exposes us to new ideas and helps us stay curious and engaged. It also gives us a sense of accomplishment and helps boost our self-confidence and resilience. There are many ways to learn new things - not just through formal qualifications. We can share a skill with friends, join a club, learn to sing, play a new sport and so much more. Read more...

Direction icon
Feeling good about the future is important for our happiness. We all need goals to motivate us and these need to be challenging enough to excite us, but also achievable. If we try to attempt the impossible this brings unnecessary stress. Choosing ambitious but realistic goals gives our lives direction and brings a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when we achieve them. Read more...
Resilience icon
All of us have times of stress, loss, failure or trauma in our lives. But how we respond to these has a big impact on our well-being. We often cannot choose what happens to us, but we can choose our own attitude to what happens. In practice it's not always easy, but one of the most exciting findings from recent research is that resilience, like many other life skills, can be learned. Read more...
Emotion icon
Positive emotions - like joy, gratitude, contentment, inspiration, and pride - are not just great at the time. Recent research shows that regularly experiencing them creates an 'upward spiral', helping to build our resources. So although we need to be realistic about life's ups and downs, it helps to focus on the good aspects of any situation - the glass half full rather than the glass half empty. Read more...
Acceptance icon
No-one's perfect. But so often we compare our insides to other people's outsides. Dwelling on our flaws - what we're not rather than what we've got - makes it much harder to be happy. Learning to accept ourselves, warts and all, and being kinder to ourselves when things go wrong, increases our enjoyment of life, our resilience and our well-being. It also helps us accept others as they are. Read more...
Meaning icon
People who have meaning and purpose in their lives are happier, feel more in control and get more out of what they do. They also experience less stress, anxiety and depression. But where do we find 'meaning and purpose'? It might be our religious faith, being a parent or doing a job that makes a difference. The answers vary for each of us but they all involve being connected to something bigger than ourselves. Read more...
About the Ten Keys
The Ten Keys to Happier Living framework was jointly developed by Vanessa King and the Action for Happiness team in 2010, based on an extensive review of the latest research evidence relating to psychological/mental wellbeing.
Ten Keys Questions for Discussion
Ten Keys Action Ideas
  • Do three extra acts of kindness today. Offer to help, give away your change, pay a compliment, or make someone smile.
  • Reach out to help someone who's struggling. Give them a call or offer your support. Let them know you care.
  • Make more time for the people who matter. Chat with a loved one or friend, call your parents or play with the kids.
  • Make three extra connections today. Stop to chat in the shop, wave at a neighbour, learn the name of someone new.
  • Be more active today. Get off a bus a stop early, take the stairs, turn off the TV, go for a walk - anything that gets you moving.
  • Eat nutritious food, drink more water, catch up on sleep. Notice which healthy actions lift your mood and do more of them.
  • Give yourself a bit of head space. At least once a day, stop and take 5 minutes to just breathe and be in the moment.
  • Notice and appreciate good things around you every day, big or small. Trees, bird song, the smell of coffee, laughter perhaps?
  • Do something for the first time today. Sample sushi, try a new route, read a different newspaper or visit a local place of interest.
  • Learn a new skill, however small. A first aid technique or a new feature on your phone. Cook a new meal or use a new word.
  • Take the first step. Think of a goal you're aiming for and do one thing to get started. Make a call, fill in that form, tell others.
  • Share your dreams. Tell 3 people about an aspiration that is really important to you this year and listen to theirs too.
  • Ask for help today. Confide in a friend, talk to an expert, reach out to a colleague, ask a neighbour to lend a hand.
  • When something is troubling you, do something you really enjoy. Shift your mood and bring a new perspective on the problem.
  • Do something that you know will make you feel good. Listen to music, watch something funny, get outside or call an old friend.
  • Try to smile and say something positive every time you walk into a room. Notice the reaction you get.
  • Ask a trusted friend or colleague to tell you what they think your real strengths are. Try to make more use of these.
  • Be as kind to yourself as you are to others. See your mistakes as opportunities to learn. Notice things you do well, however small.
  • Feel part of something bigger. Spend time with children, visit an inspiring location, gaze at the stars or join a club.
  • Be more charitable. Give others your time, offer to help neighbours or friends, consider giving blood or volunteering.
