'Place' can be a hard work to define in the English language. On the one hand, it's a physical location; on the other, it's a psychological space created by the expectations of the people who move within it.Architecture and design have a crucial role to play in defining how we as urbanites inhabit the spaces around us. Public spaces are designed with a specific form and a particular function in mind – although these functions are open to (re)interpretation. In this short film, a group of architects and planners give a crash course in placemaking, and explain the steps they have taken to improve the quality of public space in downtown Seattle.
"It's not about buildings, it's not about pipes under streets – it's about creating a space where people can interact with each other in a positive, safe way. That's the city I want."
