15 Global Challenges and the Millenium Project


Actions to Address Global Challenge 1:
U.S.-China Apollo-Like Goal, with a NASA-Like R&D program to achieve it, that others can join; if U.S. falters, then an EU-China Goal should be pursued.
Produce meat, milk, leather, and other animal products directly from genetic materials without growing animals: Saves energy, land, water, health costs, and greenhouse gases.
Seawater/saltwater agriculture.
Increase vegetarian diets.
Retrofit older cities to Eco-smart Cities and build new additions as Eco-smart Cities.
Continue policies that reduce fertility rates in high population growth areas.
Reduce energy per unit of GDP.
Increase forest coverage.
Transition from fossil to renewable energy sources (see Global Challenge 13 for more detail and http://www.go100re.net/map for current global status).
Disinvest into fossil fuels
Introduce cap-and-trade systems.
Establish carbon taxes.
Engage arts/media/entertainment to foster work/lifestyle changes.
Train community resilience teams.
Make long-range coastal evacuation and migration plans.
Evaluate geo-engineering options.


Actions to Address Global Challenge 2:
Increase R&D for lower cost of desalination.
Invest in the development of wastewater products such as fertilizer, algae (for biofuel and feeding shrimp), and recovering nitrogen and phosphorus.
Implement WHO and UNESCO plans for universal water and sanitation access.
Manage all aspects of water resources to promote efficiency, equity, and sustainable development (integrated water management).
Create and promote smart phone apps to show water used to make products.
Produce animal products from genetic materials without growing animals.
Invest in seawater/saltwater agricultural development.
Promote Increased vegetarian diets.
Mass-produce electrochemical wastewater treatment solar power toilets.
Develop point-of-use water-purification technology.


Actions to Address Global Challenge 3:
Support policies to improve child survival, family planning, and girls’ education.
Improve methods that strengthen age differential intergenerational transfers to secure skills and employment for youth and care and services for the elderly.
Implement the UN Urban Agenda.
Integrate urban sensors, mesh networks, and intelligent software to create smarter cities that let citizens help in urban improvements.
Increase training in resilience, disaster forecasting, and management.
Teach urban systems ecology.
Increase R&D in saltwater agriculture (halophytes) on coastlines to produce food for humans and animals, biofuels, and pulp for the paper industry as well as to absorb CO2, which also reduces the drain on freshwater agriculture and increases employment.
Improve rain-fed agriculture and irrigation management.
Invest in precision agriculture and aquaculture.
Produce pure meat without growing animals (demonstrated in 2013).
Genetic engineering for higher-yielding and drought-tolerant crops.
Reduce food losses from farm to mouth (one-third or 1.3 billion tons of agricultural production is wasted each year).[1]
Plant sea grass to bring back wild fish populations along the coastlines.
Expand insect production for animal feed and human diets (insects have low environmental impact per nutrition, and 2 billion people already supplement their diet with insects today).
Encourage vegetarianism.
Build floating cities for ocean wind & solar energy, agriculture, and fish farms.
Accelerate R&D for safe nanotechnology to help reduce material use per unit of output while increasing quality.

Significant results from the Baltic Ecovillage Project

balticThe project “Ecovillages for Sustainable Rural Development” financed by the EU’s Baltic Sea Region Programme, 2007–2013, which started in February 2010, is approaching its completion, delivering a number of significant results. Aimed at fostering the development of ecovillages as a more sustainable way of living in rural areas of the Baltic Sea Region, the project has been implemented by project partners from Lithuania (the lead partner), Finland, Latvia, Poland and Sweden. In addition, the project has involved associated partners from Belarus, Finland, Germany, Russia and Sweden. Simona Griškute reports.
The core project results include launching of 3 manuals on: eco-settlement practices, and environmentally friendly technologies applied in ecovillages; socio-cultural aspects of ecovillage establishment and governance; and green business and entrepreneurship. By identifying and documenting many inspirational examples and case studies, the manuals aim at contributing to the further development, application, and spreading of the sustainable solutions and innovations tailored in ecovillages, and regaining the balance between the ecological, socio-cultural and economic dimensions of sustainable living on a broader society level.
We are happy to announce that the manuals are available in the project’s website for a free download in English, Swedish, Finnish, Latvian, Lithuanian and Polish (more details further down). Manuals have also been printed and spread in the libraries of the Baltic Sea Region countries as well as other distribution channels.
By identifying and documenting many inspirational examples and case studies, the manuals aim at contributing to the further development, application and spreading of the sustainable solutions and innovations tailored in ecovillages, and regaining the balance between the ecological, socio-cultural and economic dimensions of sustainable living on a broader societal level.
The project team has also formulated a set of policy recommendations and delivered them to responsible EU institutions. Six issues: Energy; land use; planning & building regulation; public funding & support; alternative business & organizational models; education; training; information dissemination & exchange; and more R&D focus on eco-living; and alternative food production - as well as potential reforms to tackle these areas - have been identified in the recommendations.
They are addressed to national MEPs, EU institutions and other organizations on an EU level, in order to improve the development of ecovillages, and to utilize their full potential as sustainable development drivers of rural areas. Recommendations have already received positive feedback from the European Commission, that is considering the requests under the new legal framework for the 2014-2020 programming period.
In order to gather valuable knowledge accumulated through the Ecovillage movement and making it accessible to a broader public - as well as to facilitate learning for visitors - and to provide income-generation for ecovillagers, the project has created an 'Ecovillage Road' website. This is a virtual platform for ecovillages, consultants and related eco-initiatives to showcase and offer their knowledge, services and products to the general public in a variety of thematic groups.

On the same Ecovillage Road website, visitors can find a guideline for establishing an internship programme in ecovillages. The handbook is intended to assist ecovillages in establishing internships that have the intention to reach out to the wider society with the sustainable living practices; to strengthen the ecovillages themselves; and to provide the opportunities for an interested audience to get to know ecovillages.
Another project result, that is addressed towards leaders of established or initiated ecovillages, is the Ecovillage 'sustainability self-evaluation test' that serves as a tool to: a) form a vision of the ecovillage; b) diagnose the real ecovillage situation; c) assess the gap between vision and reality; and d) identify what aspects of the ecovillage governance should be improved. There are short and long versions of the test in six languages that measure an ecovillage’s real and desirable situation on six main dimensions by using a 5 point scale.
Last, but not least, one of the greatest contributions towards sustainable Europe that was not envisioned at the launching stage of the project is the formation of Baltic Ecovillage Network (BEN), which is a transnational umbrella of national ecovillages networks in the BSR. BEN offers a vehicle to continue the work started by the project towards societal recognition of the values that ecovillages pursue, and to transition to sustainable living.
By delivering the results described, the project team is willing to greatly contribute to the fostering of ecovillages development both on a national and international level. INSPIRING STORIES FROM ECOVILLAGES: EXPERIENCES WITH ECOLOGICAL TECHNOLOGIES AND PRACTICES
The manual presents a selection of inspiring stories about solutions for ecological living concerning planning, construction, energy solutions, waste and waste water management, composting and recycling, food production, and transport and commuting.
These stories are told by the inhabitants of ecovillages around the Baltic Sea region and aim at providing an inspiration to readers already familiar with ecovillages, and anyone willing to learn more about a variety of ecological living solutions. The manual also seeks to enable the reader to form a tangible and – hopefully – inspiring view of the Baltic Sea region ecovillages’ variety, particularities and creative innovativeness, on the one hand, and similarities, familiarity and respect for tradition on the other.

LIVING IN HARMONY: INSPIRING STORIES FROM ECOVILLAGES
The manual is designed as a virtual tour of European ecovillages. Here, the reader can find a collection of short ‘how we did it’ stories that describe different ecovillage models and the main elements of their design and governance. The stories represent the most interesting and effective best practice to be found in the ecovillage movement in Europe, particularly in the Baltic Sea region.
The manual consists of four chapters, each exploring a different stage of the ecovillage life cycle, starting from the establishment stage - when the main characteristics of the ecovillage should be decided - and finishing with the stage when the community becomes stable, has its own traditions and well-functioning governance, and can become a center proliferating knowledge about the ecovillage movement based on its own experiences.

THE ENTERPRISING ECOVILLAGER: ACHIEVING COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT THROUGH INNOVATIVE GREEN ENTREPRENEURSHIP
This handbook focuses on green business and entrepreneurship, offering a practical guide on how ecovillages can create business opportunities that adhere to the principles of truly green thinking.
It gives an overview of the different aspects that should be considered by the aspiring ecovillage entrepreneur, and presents examples of successful business stories from various ecovillages around Europe.
The book also strives to remedy the reluctance that many ecovillagers feel toward business, and demonstrates the ways in which ecovillages are ideally suited to run businesses that are compatible with the well-being of both people and planet; the businesses of the future.
Hopefully the handbook, packed with information, checklists and references to other books and green concepts, can accompany every enterprising ecovillager on their path towards successfully creating their own personal green livelihood.

About Amanda

The Bridge

Amanda wearing ripples.
I am a combination of Pocahontas and Belle; frolicking in nature and books is my cup of tea – which is another thing I can’t get enough of: Chai.  I enjoy hiking, snuggling with my cats, and having picnics with Ryu!
For me, Ripples began when I realized that so much of what I valued was about to be lost.  My AmeriCorps*VISTAservice was ending, and like all VISTAs, I was expected to move on to a new career.  However, doing so would mean that the resources discovered during my service would remain available only to a small number of people. It would also mean losing touch with the local, national, and international networks I had been privileged to participate in, and that these remarkable people would not have easy access to any resources I may discover in the future.  The insights and support these networks provided were so valuable that I felt they deserved a sanctuary online where anyone could be inspired, while sharing what they had to offer.
At the same time, I recognized huge gaps in what I knew, who I knew, who knew each other, and what they knew.  Certain resources were only available in specific parts of my network, and at least half the people in my network didn’t know each other…until Ripples was born!
I want to build bridges between disconnected people, places, organizations, disciplines and resources because I know that these connections are vital to creating a better world.

A Stream in the RockiesI am the clear, deep, swift water sluicing over rocks under whose lucent flow soft algae forms.  I pass beneath our bridges’ shadows and watch tadpoles mature in grassy thickets.
I love imagination.  It is freedom and life.  However, I strive for balance and happiness.  A constant question lives within me.  Do I write as clearly as possible, lovingly crafting every element of logic?  Technical manuals, how-to guides, succinct language that sidelines lyricism… do these more than poetry free and inspire?
Or do I select melody over brevity?
To the best of our ability, Manda and I will use this blog to demonstrate the inherent interdependence of all things.  I hope clarity and lyricism, logic and passion, can likewise co-exist.
Techie, word bender, meaning (re)maker, connector of all things – I embrace these qualities and infinitely more.  Since the age of five, I have found the concept of “difference” fascinating, but illusory.  To a friend, I remember saying “I can compare anything to anything else.”  Before I knew of quantum physics, this claim just felt right.
I hope to do everything I can to be the stream beneath Manda’s bridge – to live at the flowing edge of union between traditionally compartmentalized ideas and objects.  Together, we will do our utmost not to dismantle or destroy walls and rifts; this is an unnecessary, often self-defacing act of destruction.  We hope to demonstrate that they have never truly existed.

Sourcemap.org: Helping to Transform the Materials Economy


Source Map of a Typical Lap Top For over half a century now, linear product life cycles have dominated the marketplace and come to define the value sets that characterize modern economics.  The average consumer has unwittingly invested untold amounts of time, energy, and income to ensure that the Materials Economy remains a driving force throughout cultures around the world.  Product marketing incessantly bombards consumers in an effort to dupe them into believing that happiness and peace of mind are to be found in the latest product trends.

An April 2009 article published on The New Green Economy, entitled Transforming the Materials Economy, examined the outright unsustainability of the Materials Economy.  The article aimed to promulgate the devastating impact that linear product life cycles have had on the both natural and built environments, as well as the bleak future they may lay ahead if these cycles are not radically modified to mirror the circular life cycles as found in the natural world.


A new language of economics however is forging its way into the collective awareness as an ever-growing number of consumers are consciously waning their dependency on such an archaic and pernicious form of economics.  Sustainability has begun to reshape capitalism itself, but breaking the habits of old has proven to be a measured, complex process, as the public’s understanding of product life cycles remains clouded and deficient.

Hope for such change in consumer values is possible thanks to the ground-breaking endeavor of the team at Sourcemap.org, a social networking site that is helping to transform the Materials Economy by empowering product manufactures, business owners, and consumers to gauge the economic, social, and environmental impact of their manufacturing and purchasing decisions. The website provides its members with tools to create visual maps that chart the impact of product life cycles by analyzing the supply chains behind the products themselves.  These maps are then made available to other members, providing transparency with regards to product sustainability.

Leonardo Bonanni is the creator of Sourcemap, a project that is currently the focus of his doctoral work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab.  Soon after performing the research that led to the creation of the project itself, Bonanni teamed up with two developers whose collaboration has led to the design of the bulk of what is found on the website today.

Matthew Hockenberry is Sourcemap’s principal web developer, and David Zwarg is responsible for creating the site’s map visualizations that give Sourcemap its unique and innovative user-friendly format.  In an exclusive interview with The New Green Economy earlier this week, Bonanni sat down to share his insight on the project. 

 Sourcemap is an online forum centered on open supply chains, and reaching a deeper understanding of how supply chains really work is crucial in creating an authentic sense of transparency and accountability.  “If we look at the impact of industrial production on the environment, we can trace that impact to a number of different levels,” explains Bonanni.  “The biggest focus in the press has been at the consumer level, where the consumer is able to choose between one product and another based on their greenness.  We wanted to highlight the complexity of those decisions if you consider all of the steps in a product’s life cycle, especially all of those steps over which the consumer has very little control.”

“A consumer might buy something, use it, and then throw it away or recycle it; but we found that a lot of the impact that products have is actually traceable to the raw materials extraction and the manufacturing, as well as a lot of the shipping that also takes place between various steps of the supply chain.  So we really wanted to highlight the complexity of a supply chain so that in one sense we take the responsibility off consumers, while at the same time educating them about the different levels of its complexity, as well as what their role and the role of industries is in shifting current practices into something more sustainable.”

Bonanni notes that while Sourcemap aims to reach broadly across the consumer spectrum, it does in fact focus on a specific target population.  “We believe everyone has the right to know this kind of information, but we’re targeting right now individuals in businesses that stand to make a very large impact.  So, for example, if you decide where to travel with your family as a consumer, you have some impact on the amount of possible carbon offset.  But if you’re deciding where your entire company should hold its yearly meeting, you have a much bigger impact—and that’s the kind of people we’re targeting.”

“Basically only environmental engineers know anything about how to assess carbon footprints.  We’re trying to make it so that any decision maker at the professional level can make a decision that’s beneficial, ranging from something as simple as what food to order when you cater an event, to something as complex as what products should you release on the market.”

One of the tools on Sourcemap that makes such decision making possible is the CO2e receipt feature provided for each supply chain. The receipt discloses the product’s total carbon footprint, measured in CO2e—the carbon dioxide equivalent produced upon manufacturing and processing the product.  (CO2e is the internationally recognized measure of greenhouse emissions.)

Take for example, one source map created by a site member for a popular tennis shoe—the Nike Air Max 180.  This particular map shows the final product to be assembled in Vietnam, using nine different components—such as leather, PU flexible foam, and Nylon 6—originating from four different countries, ranging from Argentina to China.  The specific weight in kilograms of each individual component is provided, as well as the carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) produced upon manufacturing and processing the individual amount of each component.

In this case, the shoe’s carbon dioxide equivalent comes out to 5.13 kg per pair.  The receipt also shows the product’s total weight to be 1.59 kg, and that the from start to finish, the product traverses some 30,000 km across the globe before it finds its way into the hands of retailers and customers in Anytown, USA.
When asked to reflect upon some of the major problems that have resulted from an unchecked dependency on linear life cycles, Bonanni referenced the scarcity of the planet’s natural resources.  Citing copper as an example, he noted that far too much of the metal is being extracted and manufactured to be put into computers, with no practical way of making that same metal available for future use.  Bonanni also cited that many large companies are having trouble certifying their supply chains beyond the direct supplier, causing them to reconsider outsourcing the parts of their supply chain.  Perhaps one of the more immediate effects of larger companies reassessing whether to outsource supply chains will be a greater focus on local economies.  Bonnani feels that in there is finally a push in the U.S. towards supporting local economies, especially in food and agriculture.

“Sourcemap allows you to visualize social impact,” says Bonanni, “because wherever you’re buying the product is also where jobs are going to be created.  And most of the time it’s where the infrastructure that you build and the culture as a whole will be healthier.  The source maps allow people to decide what location means to them.  In some cases, it may mean investing locally, while in others it may mean investing in a particular country if interest that you want to see preserved.”

Sourcemap is an open source project, and Bonanni encourages those concerned from all over the world to contribute to the effort.  The website currently offers some 600 different source maps, tracking the CO2e for material goods, food products, and even popular modes of transportation.  Creating a new source map requires users to join the website at no cost.  For more information, visit http://www.sourcemap.org/.

Green Hearts and Nature Play

Green Hearts is a nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to restoring and strengthening the bonds between children and nature.

We believe that frequent, unstructured childhood play in natural settings is a crucial stage in the development of life-long conservation values -- and thus helps lead to adult conservation behaviors.

This kind of "nature play" is now an endangered part of American childhood. Green Hearts' mission is to help bring it back.

What Is Nature Play?

What do you remember about your childhood nature play? Millions of Americans fondly recall playing outdoors in natural settings, doing things like:

* Building tree houses;
* Catching frogs and fireflies;
* Splashing in creeks;
* Daydreaming in a special hiding place; or
* Digging holes “to China.”

These activities are all nature play: unstructured childhood play in “wild” areas, whether it’s the vacant lot next door, the local neighborhood park, or the “back forty” of your farm.

At its very best, nature play isn’t scheduled, planned, or led by adults, nor is it confined by grown-ups’ rules. Instead, it’s open-ended, free-time exploration and recreation, without close adult supervision. For many of us, this sort of nature play virtually defined our childhoods.


Why Is Nature Play Important?

There is a growing body of research data about the multiple positive impacts of nature play on children’s social, emotional, intellectual, and physical well-being. Richard Louv has done a great job of reviewing these benefits in his best-selling book, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder.

However, for Green Hearts'mission the most valuable impact of nature play is on conservation. Multiple studies in several countries, over more than 25 years, have found that frequent, unstructured childhood play in natural spaces is the most common influence on the development of life-long conservation values and conservation behaviors.

Thus, for the task of building greater future societal support for conservation, frequent nature play is more powerful than education, participation in youth groups, or even the influence of parents and other mentors. Nature play is strong stuff!


The Challenges to Nature Play

Unfortunately, many factors are converging to make nature play increasingly rare in American childhoods, including:

* Less children’s access to unregulated green spaces where they can freely play;
* Growing parental fears of letting children play outdoors without close supervision;
* The mushrooming allure and availability of plugged-in play;
* Longer school days and increasing amounts of homework; and
* The trend to over-schedule children in structured, adult-led activities.

The unhappy result is that most American children no longer enjoy regular nature play. In fact, one study found that our children now spend an average of just 30 minutes per week in unstructured outdoor play.


The Environmental Impacts of Vanishing Nature Play


Nature play has been found to be the most common influence on the development of adult conservation values. Now it is fading away. Without the lasting impacts of nature play, what will guide future generations into cherishing the natural world?

Many people believe that increased amounts of formal environmental education might lead to more wise conservation behavior in our society. Unfortunately, research shows that the lasting conservation impacts of school-based environmental education are limited, at best. In fact, broader research finds that learning is not a prime determinant of most human behavior. Instead, many other factors drive our behavior, with our emotions and immediate needs often being the most powerful ones.

As a conservation organization, Green Hearts’ ultimate aim is to help make conservation behaviors a dominant value in American culture. To achieve this, we believe that we must find ways to put nature back into children’s hearts, not just into their brains. Nature play is the key to this challenge.


Restoring Nature Play

Nature play can be brought back! First we must expand public understanding of the importance of nature play — an effort that is now underway across the United States. Then we must develop and implement structured (and hence replicable) ways of bring unstructured nature play back to childhood.

Green Hearts is certain that this can be done, using methods such as:

* New approaches to neighborhood design and home landscaping;
* The creation of schoolyard nature play areas;
* Development of nature play areas within community parks; and
* The expansion of nature preschools, where young children enjoy daily play and explorations in green spaces.

Nature Preschools

Green Hearts' long-term goal is to develop and operate a multi-state network of nature preschools.

What Is a Nature Preschool?

A nature preschool is a fully-licensed child care operation that uses a natural area as a regular focus of its student activities.

Typically, nature preschool classes go outside every day to enjoy loosely-structured explorations and play in natural settings. In this core component of a nature preschool, the teachers’ roles are to gently facilitate the process, to ensure safety, and to provide guidance and information as needed. The children's own interests and discoveries guide these daily explorations, rather than any predetermined activity outlines or academic goals and objectives. The excursions normally last 45 to 90 minutes each day, and are done in any weather conditions that are not actually dangerous.

Children and parents understand that these outdoor activities will often get the children wet, dirty, hot, and/or cold. Good outdoor clothes are a must, and a change of clothes is always kept on hand for each child. The underlying motto is simple: There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes!

Most nature preschools also include daily free-play time in a structured playground which is usually more naturalistic in design than traditional play areas. To comply with most states' laws, these playgrounds are enclosed with natural barriers or fencing.

Children playing there are supervised, but they are enjoying individual nature play rather than the group explorations that each class does daily.

Nature preschools always offer indoor activities, too — typically including stories, music, construction play, art, dramatic play, snack, etc. In this regard they are very similar to other types of preschools, though nature preschools usually incorporate natural themes and materials throughout their indoor activities.

Curriculum

Most nature preschools do not put a heavy emphasis on early academics. Instead, they opt for a balanced curriculum that seeks to develop the “whole child” -- i.e., cognitive, physical, social, emotional, and creative development.

To do this most effectively, the children's activities draw from their own interests, discoveries, and observations -- with the preschools' natural settings providing a treasure trove of opportunities and adventure. General themes may be followed, such as seasonal changes outside, or growing a vegetable garden -- but each day's activities remain flexible, to allow for the ever-changing delights and surprises of nature.

This child-centered approach is a very good fit with current understandings of how young children best grow and develop, despite American society’s apparent obsession with moving formal academic instruction into earlier and earlier ages. The whole child approach is also excellent preparation for school readiness.

Operational Structure

Nature preschools operate on an annual tuition basis and have daily, weekly, and yearly schedules similar to that of most preschools. Parents can typically choose either morning or afternoon sessions, meeting from two to five days per week. The children are usually ages three, four, or five at enrollment; it is common to require a child to be three before entering and to be fully toilet trained.

Some preschools use mixed-age classes, while others separate their students by age. There are thoughtful reasons and beliefs behind both of these approaches.

Class sizes (maximum) usually range from 12 to 18 students, with either two or three teachers per classroom. Most states’ licensing rules include maximum student-to-

teacher ratios, and these ratios are sometimes different for indoor activities than they are for outdoor excursions. Even with a smaller nature preschool classroom, two teachers are considered essential — and a third adult can be very handy. Occasionally this “third adult” role is filled by a college intern or a long-term volunteer, rather than by another paid staff member.

Facilities

American nature preschools have permanent facilities with at least one dedicated classroom plus appropriately equipped restrooms. The classroom(s) can be used for other purposes when the preschool is not in session, but for some audiences that will require the movement of a lot of specialized furniture
and equipment.

State licensing usually dictates specific guidelines for minimum classroom size (measured by square feet per child), number and location of restrooms, number of exits, fire suppression requirements, size of playground, etc.

Benefits of Nature Preschools


From the perspective of a conservation organization, the core rationale for nature preschools is that they provide their students with a very close approximation of the kind of frequent, unstructured, outdoor childhood play that research has identified as being the most common influence on the development of life-long conservation values. They are thus a strong fit with the conservation and education missions of most nature centers and similar organizations.

Since they attend for at least two days per week over at least one full school year, preschool students are assured of far more direct contact time with the outdoors than students receive in nearly any other model of environmental education. In fact, each child enrolled in a nature preschool will usually enjoy hundreds of hours exploring and playing in natural settings during the course of his or her preschool experience.

This approach is more likely to generate life-changing experiences than are shorter, infrequent, cognitive-focused EE programs. In addition, nature preschools' loosely-structured, daily outdoor explorations allow the time and opportunity for real discovery and play, as compared to traditional K-12 environmental education lessons that are scheduled, regulated, and confined by schools’ curriculum objectives.

The nature preschool model also provides exceptional support for the overall healthy growth and development of children. The daily explorations build valuable skills such as observation, experimentation, and sorting, while allowing for both individual experiences and group sharing. The children's outdoor discoveries also provide great subjects for all manner of artistic and verbal expression, and the daily walks help to establish early habits of physical fitness.

Perhaps most of all, nature preschool students truly learn how to learn –- developing the curiosity and joy that should pervade all education, while practicing key social skills such as sharing, waiting one's turn, and following simple directions.

Where Are They?

The most prominent nature preschools in the United States are affiliated with community nature centers. There are less than 20 of these, and they are scattered across the country, in places like Milwaukee (WI), Saint Paul (MN), Kalamazoo (MI), New Canaan (CT), and Lincoln (NE).

There are undoubtedly many other less-visible, private preschools that also follow similar philosophies, using nature-based play as the central component of their curriculum, but most of these are not known beyond their immediate communities. However, as understanding of the effectiveness and success of nature preschools grow, their numbers are gradually increasing.

Green Hearts' long-term goal is to develop and operate its own multi-state network of nature preschools, embedded within small "children's nature centers" that stress play-based nature experiences in all their activities.



People to People International

HISTORY


The purpose of People to People International is to enhance international understanding and friendship through educational, cultural and humanitarian activities involving the exchange of ideas and experiences directly among peoples of different countries and diverse cultures.

People to People International is dedicated to enhancing cross-cultural communication within each community, and across communities and nations. Tolerance and mutual understanding are central themes. While not a partisan or political institution, PTPI supports the basic values and goals of its founder, President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The President’s People to People Program was founded on September 11, 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, as part of the U.S. Information Agency. After President Eisenhower left the office of President in 1961, he arranged to have the program privatized as a nongovernmental organization and arranged for People to People to become a not-for-profit Missouri corporation now known as People to People International. President Eisenhower was Chairman of the Board of Trustees and recognized as the founder of the not-for-profit organization. It is incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in the state of Missouri and qualifies for exemption from income tax under the Internal Revenue Code §501(c)(3). PTPI is funded through program fees, membership dues and donations.

Among the early leaders working with President Eisenhower were J. C. Hall, the founder of Hallmark Cards, Inc., Walt Disney, Bob Hope and approximately 100 other remarkable individuals from industry, academia, and the arts. The late Charles M. Schulz, creator of the Peanuts comic strip, generously contributed three pieces of artwork for PTPI Worldwide Conferences. The organization has reaped benefits from the talents of countless individuals who have supported the ideals set forth by President Eisenhower. Today, President Eisenhower's granddaughter, Mary, serves as President and Chief Executive Officer.

Through People to People International's Awards Program, world leaders have been recognized for their contributions toward peace. Among the recipients of PTPI's most prestigious award, the Eisenhower Medallion, are Mother Teresa - 1988; Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin - 1996 (posthumously); President Anwar el Sadat - 1996 (posthumously); Save the Children - 1998; His Grace the Archbishop Desmond M. Tutu - 2000.

What is a University Chapter?

Chapters are the backbone of our organization since they actualize the People to People International ideal of increasing international understanding and education at the local level. As a member of a People to People International Chapter you are part of the PTPI international network.

What are the benefits of belonging?

Educational:
University chapters strive to work in conjunction with university curriculum to provide members with a "global education." A "global education" is the set of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that prepare individuals to live and compete in an increasingly multicultural, interconnected, and fast changing global society.

"Global education" is not just for those planning to pursue international careers post-graduation; all careers have been affected by the globalization of our society.

International awareness, cultural understanding and a global perspective are skills essential to succeed in multiple fields including humanitarian work, healthcare, business, and sciences.

Career Enhancing:
Be a more global candidate for any position you apply for. As our world becomes more and more of a global community your international experience and understanding will make you more attractive to potential employers.

Personal Growth:
University Chapters are an opportunity for college and university students to participate in the advancement of world peace. They're a fun way for students to learn about various nations, cultures and world affairs through personal interaction. Student members received unique international opportunities through PTPI programs and programs developed by the chapter.

PTPI’s Lafayette College (Pards to People) Chapter in Easton, PA participates in a city-wide cleanup, walking tour of Easton, and community dinner.

What do University Chapters do?

Chapters are required to complete a total of four programs annually, one from each of the following categories:

Community service at the local or international level
Examples:
  • Participate in or plan an International Fair in your school or community.
  • Discuss international career opportunities; introduce foods, music, art, dance and cultures from around the world.
Community service at the local or international level
Examples:
  • Neighborhood clean up.
  • Serving meals at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter.
  • Volunteering time at local civic organization.
  • Adopting an international project. PTPI can provide opportunities for international, humanitarian or community service projects.
Fund raising
Examples:
  • Organize a bake sale, neighborhood yard sale, etc.
  • Plan a chapter fundraising breakfast or dinner.
  • There are numerous fundraising possibilities for chapter activities. Contact local businesses, restaurants, stores, sporting venues (work concession stand), explore local options.
Social event/membership recruitment drive
Examples:
  • Invite friends to a specific event, for example a carnival or other social gathering.
  • Create a contest: person who brings in the most new members will receive a prize. The local chapter can establish recruitment awards.

Five steps to forming a University Chapter

  1. Gather your group together. Chapters need to have a minimum of ten members and must elect at least four officers.
  2. Get it down on paper!
    1. Approve Chapter Bylaws, which are consistent with the by-laws of PTPI (sample provided);
    2. decide on projected activities intended to be undertaken by the chapter;
    3. complete the application for a charter;
    4. and include a list of chapter members.
  3. Appoint or elect a Campus Advisor. We require selecting a faculty or university staff member to fill this position. Campus Advisors are very important to the development and success of the University Chapter. Advisors act as mentor and provide guidance for the Chapter Board of Directors as well as all chapter members.
  4. Get your school's approval. A letter of confirmation from the College or University President is required to endorse that the student chapter is within the approved list of campus extra curricular activities.
  5. Let's make it official! When the complete application is submitted and if approved, PTPI Headquarters will issue a charter to our newest University Chapter!
